COURSE CURRICULUM AT A GLANCE: MONTH #1- THE SELF MONTH #2- THE OTHER MONTH #3- THE BEYOND MONTH #4- PHYSICAL TECHNIQUE & ENSEMBLE MONTH #5- DEVELOP THE SHOW MONTH #6- RETREAT- INTEGRATION COMING HOME OUR RESEARCH: We will be exploring the following: Clown, Embodied practice, Movement, Ritual, Heyoka- Sacred Clown, Performance & Material development, Film & Camera, Solo, Duo, Ensemble, Grotowski practice, Improvisation. Unleashing the Ridiculous, the trickster, getting to know the bouffon/ the outcast. As well as looking at how the practice of Clown can help us to live whole heartedly, true to ourselves in every day life as well as improving performance, building confidence and communication with others and we will be doing this by modelling a consistent community dedicated to developing the practice. It is my understanding that Clown is not just a performance expression but a philosophy and way of life, a life of connection, expressive freedom, humour, authenticity, honesty, presence, intuition, risk, commitment and the ability to fail well. It's one thing to perform clown but another to adopt the profound teachings into your life and work. This is no easy feat, it's a deep developmental process unleashing your self-expression, understanding your limitations on a visceral level and taking courageous risks to express authentically before others. COMMITMENT:
* As this is a 5 month training it is reliant on everyone being there to deepen the development of the work and the community. If for some reason you are unable to attend a weekend and you are paying the monthly instalments you will still be required to pay the course fee- Depending on the circumstance you may be admitted to an additional private session to catch you up on the work. |
Course Outline
Month # 1- The SelfIn the first month we will explore the theme of the self; Who am I? Who am I really? What is funny about me? What is ridiculous about me? The focus here is to come to accept all of ourselves and our attributes and learn what we find challenging, where our edge and our boundaries are and how to play with the comedy of who we are in an empowered way. Techniques in the first month are informed by; games, mindfulness, presence, action/ reaction, eye contact, solo and ensemble performance, movement, song and more.
MONTH # 4 - PHYSICAL TECHNIQUE
After working with and deepening our awareness of self, other and the beyond we will then allow physical technique and skill in to guide our performance. In month #4 we will work with status, in duos and in group ensemble. We will focus on fixed point, stillness, movement, rhythm, remembering what worked and what didn't, body isolation, dance, complicity, and how to recognise what is working and what isn't in order to improve ones performance.
|
Month # 2- The OtherThe second month our focus is on the other; to develop sensitivity, listening, love and compassion for our audience. This month of course leads us into the flop, the moment everything goes wrong in other words ego disillusion. So then who are we? Who are we in relation to another? And how does our audience aka. another outside of ourselves transform our presence and our sense of self? How does one insist on collaborating with and not give our power to the other?
Our mantra of optimism- "If that doesn't work, then this will" In this module we will work with exercises around listening with the whole body, conscious response, body awareness, mindfulness, intuition, truth and honesty, and insist on finding the game. MONTH #5 -SUPER CLOWNS PERFORMANCE RETREAT
In month #5 we will work off of the previous subjects and gather in gorgeously inspiring natural landscape to develop material for a show building an act or a show to present the following month. This may take the shape of a solo, duo, group and ensemble piece of performance. In this module participants will be asked to showcase their ideas to the class and gain assistance and mentorship from the group and facilitator in how to develop the piece further. Taking and building on the best of what the material found and developing it further.
|
Month # 3- The BeyondThe third month we will dive in to the beyond the beyond, exploring Sacred clowning, bouffon, butoh, breath work, ritual clown, ritual theatre, and psycho magic. Building off of the knowledge of the self and awareness of the other we will train our intuition to guide us to go beyond expectation in order to be free to surprise ourselves and others. This module is about un-conditioning, un-learning and de-colonizing ourselves in order to gain access to a less defined, free space to respond with divine timing. We will work with liminal space, the unknown, the edge, our shadows and fears, truth, honesty and ritual to give voice to what yearns to come out from the depths.
MONTH # 6- SHOW & INTEGRATION
In our final month together The participants will gather to host a cabaret night in London to showcase their developments from the previous module to a family/friends only invited audience in a Clownlife Cabaret. The aim of this is to give participants material and experience to take out into the world after the course is finished. We will also have an integration session to discuss our finale and celebrate the journey we have embarked on together during the past 6 months.
