Dear friends,
I’m so happy to share that the Clown Arcana Deck is finally here- a 22-card, hand-painted Tarot deck of the Major Arcana, accompanied by a guidebook.This project has been a five-year journey!
Each card was lived with, not just created. I spent a minimum of two weeks with every archetype- inviting it into my creative practice, dancing with it, painting it, clowning it, and allowing its imagery and symbolism to emerge through experience.
Some cards, like Death and The Devil, required much deeper processes and took several months to complete. At times I would destroy and begin again, until something true came through, or until I was able to let go and move forward. Because of this, each card carries a strong sense of presence and potency. They are not just representations, but lived encounters.
The guidebook was created in a similar way. I worked with the deck directly- asking questions, pulling cards, and allowing each archetype to inform both my creative process and the writing itself. Originally, the text became a much larger body of work.
What exists now is a condensed version designed to accompany the deck- with a longer, more in-depth what I am calling the "BIG book" to come in the future for those who wish to explore the Clown Lens and my Clown pedagogy more deeply.
And it didn't stop there, I went on to create an hour long show- a live Collective Tarot Reading- to play with my research in clown improvisation, psychomagic and ritual and clown as emergent living theatre. My partner Rowan improvises the sound and lighting and jams off of the cards that I pull, the energy of the room and myself as the games master. It is an absolute unpredictable riot. In last years tour many people came to the show again and again to experience the different readings of the night, and every time it was spot on in sync with the energies of the room. I invite you to come see it some time. And it is so exciting to now have this sweet companion that folks can take home after the show, as a potent momentum but also a playful life companion through all of life's mysteries and struggles. For me, that is what the Tarot is- Its a game to play as seriously as we like, a game to invite deeper meaning into our lives and explore our personal growth and the magic that comes when we ask the universe our big and small questions...
